One afternoon in 2017, I made a disturbing discovery: Ashanti had blocked me on Twitter.

Obviously, I was shaken. What had I done to offend the R&B songstress? With thousands of tweets posted and a poor grasp of the site’s integrated search function, I had no idea. I publicly appealed to her former collaborators and associates, including Nelly, Ja Rule and Nas, seeking an explanation for the rupture. In the recesses of my memory, something stirred; bookshelves, a camera flash. But what was I barely recollecting?
